How to Take Care of Your Car Like A Grown Up in 2018

1. Clean the inside and outside of your car at least every 30 days

Not only do you spend a lot of time in your car (often every single day), everyone can see your car and use it to gauge how clean or dirty you are. Dirt and grime can build over time and permanently damage the interior and exterior if not cleaned properly.

2. Change your oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles

Nearly all experts agree that oil needs to be changed out regularly to extend the longevity of your car and prevent damage. Check your oil every month and replace with fresh oil every 5k – 7.5k miles. If you don’t, dirt will build up and eventually destroy your engine, ultimately costing you thousands of dollars and a lot of unnecessary frustration. We are currently offering 50% off all oil changes at World Class Auto Repair in American Fork until March 15, 2018.

3. Check your tire pressure every 30 days and rotate your tires every 7,500 miles

Low or high tire pressure can cause weak braking, reduced gas mileage, instability, exaggerated wear and tear on joints, and a tire blow out. Check your tire pressure regularly with a gauge and check your car manual/tire manufacturer to know the exact recommended pressure for your specific make and model. Make sure to also rotate your tires every 7,500 miles. Replacing your tires can cost anywhere from $350 – $1200, so it’s worth it to check on them and rotate them regularly.

4. Get your brake pads replaced every 25,000 miles

Neglecting to check on your brake pads regularly can lead to brake rotors falling or brake pads wearing out. Brakes can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars to replace and, in the worst case scenario, can lead to panic and emergency when not working properly. Make having your brake pads looked at and taken care of by a professional part of your regular routine. Make sure brake pads are replaced every 25k miles to avoid any issues.

5. Change your air filter every 30,000 miles or annually

Air filters are like the lungs of your car. You need to keep them clean and healthy so you car can accelerate properly, maintain efficiency, and get the best gas mileage possible. It takes 15 minutes to replace your air filter. Leaving a dirty air filter in can cause your engine to fail and damage your combustion chamber.

6. Keep your engine’s temperature balanced with antifreeze every 15,000 miles

Antifreeze keeps your engine from overheating or freezing in various temperatures. With old or low antifreeze, your engine may overheat, causing it to bust seals and gaskets. These will lead to leaks and a very expensive repair. In contrast, it is $10 for a bottle of antifreeze/coolant. Make sure to check levels every 15k miles and fill up/replace as necessary.

7. Check your spark plugs every 30,000 miles and replace them every 60,000 miles

Spark plugs are essential for your car to function properly and for your engine to maintain excellent health. Old spark plugs can destroy gas mileage, ruin acceleration, and eventually cause irreparable damage to your engine. Make sure to get your spark plugs checked by a shop every 30,000 miles and replace them if they’ve gone bad.

8. Always ask an expert about car trouble when you’re not sure yourself

Cars are complex. Every make and model is a little different. You can cause serious damage to your car when trying to DIY a repair or replacement that you’re not sure about. When in doubt, always take your car into a mechanic to figure out what’s going on. Save yourself all the trouble and frustration of trying to DIY something as expensive and complex as your car.
